Computers : HP TouchSmart

Meet the new HP TouchSmart PC. According to HP, the TouchSmart 'combines a 22" diagonal hi-def widescreen with a powerful energy efficient Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (T5750 and T5850, running at 2.00GHz and 2.16GHz, respectively) in a single, integrated design.' It has an integrated built-in TV tuner, a built-in webcam and microphone and integrated high-performance premium 2.0 speakers. The wireless keyboard possesses an ambient light mode allowing you to set the mood while browsing and more importantly, this all-in-one design makes accommodation for the essentials - a slot-loading Super-Multi DVD-R/RW burner, a 5-in-1 integrated memory card reader and 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN and bluetooth.

Though the Touchsmart looks sexy and intuitive, a major drawback I see is the numerous smudges and fingerprints; if you're like me, that's going to be a major pet peeve. This is a great computer for students and first-timers, but for the computer enthusiasts, this is bound to be disappointing. The system doesn't allow for an easy upgrade and the video cards for the two models range from mediocre to good. For the prices ($1250, model IQ504 and $1450, model IQ506 (see bestbuy.com)) a better computer can be built.

Auto : Tesla Roadster

Introducing the new 2009 Tesla Roadster. It is one of the few 100% electric vehicles around and is capable of achieving a top speed of 125 mph. Incredibly, for an all electric vehicle it has awesome acceleration, capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. It can travel distances of 227 miles on a full charge. However, all this luxury comes at a steep price with a base price of $109,000.

The manufacturer offers several factory options ranging from a premium audio package to custom exterior paint to variations in the power connector. Under the hood, the Roadster is equipped with a 3-phase, 4-pole electric motor, 248hp peak (185kW), redline 13,000 rpm, regenerative "engine braking". The battery pack is a custom microprocessor-controlled lithium-ion battery pack, with useful life in excess of 100,000 miles. For an all electric, this vehicle doesn't disappoint and like the Honda FCX Clarity (see below) it possesses an exterior sexiness not seen with other vehicles in its class.

Auto : 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
Posted by Jason on Saturday June 21, 2008 @ 4:12AM
  s
Chevrolet announced the much-anticipated 2009 Corvette ZR1 that can reach speeds of 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds while reaching a top speed of 205 mph. This dazzling beauty is equipped with a 600-plus horsepower (638 bhp), 6.2-liter supercharged LS9 V-8 with an unusually large 604 lb.-ft. of torque. This all comes at a hefty manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $103,300.

With all this you'd expect the ZR1 to be very liberal with gas consumption but it (surprisingly) has an estimated EPA fuel economy of 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. The ZR1 is meant for ultimate performance and with its pumped-up and supercharged engine and high-tech components weigh a nominal 3300-lb. curb-weight. Keeping up appearances, the ZR1 doesn't disappoint. It keeps the signature larger wheels and tires, 19 x 10 in the front (size 285/30R-19) and 20 x 12 at the rear (size 335/25R-20).

Cell Phones : Apple Iphone 3G

Hey Guys, Apple recently announced the impending launch of the new Apple Iphone 3G, due in stores July 11th. According to Apple's website, "with fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. And like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one — a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser. iPhone 3G. It redefines what a mobile phone can do — again."......What Apple fails to address, however, and hopefully they will come to their senses and address it promptly, is its incompatibility with flash-based websites, rendering many of them unreadable. Hopefully, whatever squabble Apple and Adobe has will be addressed promptly for the benefit of consumers.

Introducing the Honda FCX Clarity coming to the nearest hydrogen-filling station near you. This ground-breaking vehicle sports zero-emission technology meaning that water is the only by-product of fuel combustion. Not only is it environmentally benign, but it maintains a streamline sexiness not seen in hybrids, like the Prius. This, folks, is definitely the car of the future......and the future is here!!

Apple : The Apple iBox

If you've seen the latest Apple commercials, you saw how they try to make Microsoft look like a bunch of corporate idiots who know absolutely nothing about what consumers want in their computers.

Not that it's not true; it's actually quite funny at how they take little errors PC has made in their computers and shaken it up and splurted it in their faces.

Introducing the Apple iBox (the next-next generation console). Although it's not real, they follow the same commercial style as the new Apple commercials, and they do a pretty good job at it.

Video Games : Xbox 360 Price Drop This Xmas?
Posted by Yoey on Tuesday August 29, 2006 @ 11:55PM
  s
It looks like Sony shouldnt be celebrating the release of the PS3 this christmas because Microsoft may have them beat, yet again. According to a source close to Microsoft, Bill Gates and team are planning to drop the XBOX 360's price around $100 this christmas.

How will they do this? The source also revealed that the XBOX360 hardware team is redesigning the chips (which are supplied by ATI and IBM) to cut the costs and allow the price drop.

If this holds true you will be able to buy an Xbox 360 for half the price of the PS3 this christmas.

Internet : An Inside View From a Google Employee

James in the forum points to a very in-depth Something Awful discussion board interview with what seems to be the guy who took over the Google Calculator project as his current 20% project (I can’t confirm that he’s indeed a Google employee, though his answers look credible). His nickame is “ZorbaTHut” and he’s been programming for 17 years.

Here are some interesting bits from the multi-page interview:

"orbaTHut says that Google is mostly C++, Java, and Python (or so he’s been told).

“We’ve got extensive automated unit tests, all of which (obviously) must pass.”

On the question of “Is google concerned about a lot of the fraud that goes on with Adsense?”, he answers: “Like you wouldn’t believe. .... The problem with [click-fraud] is just that it’s a very, very hard issue to fix.“

On getting hired by Google:
“The Google application process is annoyingly slow and can easily take months sometimes. Anyone who’s really interested in working there would be much better off finding an employee to refer them”

Zorba adds that you’ll get interviewed not based on your diploma, but your skills.

“Nobody keeps track of 20% time with any care whatsoever. It’s assumed that, if a deadline is pressing on your main project, you’ll work on that. If your main project constantly has looming deadlines, it’s time to talk to your manager or your tech lead and tell them that they’re pushing too hard.” Zorba adds that management understands that a programmer can’t be pushed over limits for more than a week at a time."

Video Games : 4D Gaming, The PS3, and The PS4
Posted by Yoey on Tuesday June 20, 2006 @ 5:18PM
  s

Kazuruu Michico, from the magazine Japan Today, wrote an article about 4D Gaming, The PS3, and The PS4. Here is the translated version :

" There is talk of intergration of the PS3 into a whole cell blade server system (4D, constantly changing environments due to some idiot blowing things up when your offline), eventually making games intergrated with online environments, meaning game developers create their entire game environment (Crowds, Physics, AI...) online (which means the graphics of the environment will constantly improving after the release of the game), therefore the only thing you'll have on your discs are the story, character models, voice overs, ETC., it's ambitous and is being made possible for the PS3 or PS4 (Epic is trying to do something similar for UT 2007, Animal Crossing doing this to an extent), but the problem is bandwidth restrictions and some other things their trying to workout... it'll be intresting to see how this will work out.

Essentially this is what Mr. Kutagari dreaming up (obviously WoW, and the matrix being a big factor for his idea) 4D, eliminating HDDs (with online accounts replacing this issue) and optical discs(Hello! Matrix), basically this WoW extreme with the entire gaming world in one server permenantly elimanating backward compatibility issues, making PSP2 par with future playstations etc.

Given Sonys current track record this entire combination is PS4 based.

Furthermore it'll be intresting to see this in a unified game on the PS3, rather then only on UT 2007, hey we may even have something similar and bigger then WoW on are hands. "

I doubt 4-D Gaming will be possible with this generation of PS3 consoles; however, I don't see why it wouldnt be compatible with the PS4. Ken Kutaragi may be thinking a little outside the box for now, but he does know his stuff.
